When it comes to the Premier League era, Mohamed Salah, not Steven Gerrard, is Liverpool’s best player of all time

On Saturday, Salah scored again for Liverpool, pulling the Reds out of a scoreless stalemate at Anfield late in the Merseyside derby to win by a score of 2-0.

Up until the 75th minute, the Toffees seemed like they were going to come away with an extremely creditable point after Ashley Young was sent out for a second yellow card.

Salah, however, made it 15 games in a row in which he scored or assisted, tapping in a second in added time after Michael Keane’s handball presented him with a great opportunity from the penalty spot.

So, after saving his team once again, it was no surprise that Mail Sport’s Liverpool expert Dom King debated on It’s All Kicking Off whether Salah is the best Reds star in the Premier League era.

“Steven Gerrard is the one that — the very fact that we’re debating this demonstrates what Salah has accomplished in seven years… For a long time, Steven held the club. Salah, I think, since he’s come in, has been extraordinary,” King said.

He has played in 227 out of 237 possible Premier League games since his arrival. Then there are the goals: he has 194. People often draw parallels between him and Steven Gerrard, another fantastic player who never won the Premier League. It’s hard to imagine anyone arguing that Mo Salah, in the Premier League era, isn’t Liverpool’s greatest player of all time.

Salah has scored 32 goals for the Reds since he joined the team in 2017, and he has won three different Golden Boot trophies in his time there.

After departing the English top flight in 2016 for a series of loans to Roma, he has swiftly established himself as one of the world’s best right wingers since his return to the Premier League.

King, however, thinks Salah’s status is much higher and that he deserves to be recognized as a ‘genuine great’ of the English game, potentially on par with Cristiano Ronaldo.

I don’t think people realize we’re seeing a genuine world-class player, he remarked. It’s not like Ronaldo was here and people were talking about him all the time.

Salah didn’t have a good game on Saturday, but he still managed to score. When you show up at Anfield, you anticipate nothing less than a goal from him. The impact it has on the group and the confidence it instills when someone is performing at their best.

Sutton concurred, saying, “You’re absolutely right, he has taken Liverpool to another level.”

His consistency is seen in the number of games he has played and the number of goals he has scored year after year. When you’re in the tunnel with guys like Shearer and Larsson, you know they’ll be dependable if and when a big chance presents itself.

But Sutton said that only one other Premier League player has ever come close to matching his ruthlessness in front of goal.

More than dependability, it’s ruthlessness, and Salah is as vicious as any Premier League player has ever been (save maybe Haaland)!
