The 12th consecutive year, PSG advanced to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage after a nail-biting Group F final.
After a 1-1 draw at league leaders Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, PSG finished with eight points, good enough for second place in the group.
Losing in Germany would have dropped the French champions to third place, behind AC Milan.
On Wednesday, Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze scored for Milan as they defeated Newcastle 2-1 away.
In the 33rd minute, Newcastle took the lead thanks to a goal from Joelinton. Those goals came afterward.
To advance to Wednesday’s last group stage match, Newcastle knew they had to defeat Milan and cross their fingers that PSG would lose at Dortmund.
With UEFA’s help, the two matches took place at the same time, with the second halves starting at the same times as the first.
After Joelinton’s lightning-fast strike put Newcastle ahead, Eddie Howe’s squad took a huge boost six minutes into halftime when they learned that Dortmund had taken the lead against PSG thanks to a goal from Karim Adeyemi.
Two goals in three minutes, though, turned the tide in favor of PSG.
Warren Zaire-Emery scored the first goal for Paris Saint-Germain versus Dortmund in Germany on 56 minutes.
After receiving an assist from Olivier Giroud, Pulisic equalized Milan’s score in the 59th minute against Newcastle with a first-time strike from close range.
After a 21-month absence, the American finally scored in the Champions League. In March of 2022, he scored his last goal for Chelsea in a 2-1 victory over Lille.
For the first time in Champions League history, Newcastle were within striking distance of advancing to the knockout stage—just one goal away.
As a result of Chukwueze’s goal in the 84th minute, Milan won 2-1 and advanced to the Europa League, while the Magpies were eliminated from the competition.
