With Chelsea’s £81 million windfall, Mauricio Pochettino could afford to make a dream January transfer

If Chelsea’s performance and results don’t improve, Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that the club will return to the transfer market to acquire new players. After losing both their Premier League matches against Everton and Manchester United, the Blues are now in 12th place.

“We need to check that is the reality after five months,” Pochettino remarked following last weekend’s loss at Goodison Park. If we don’t get enough, maybe we should talk to the athletic director and owner about making some changes so we can be more active in the second half of the season and shift the dynamic.

During the summer transfer window, the Blues spent more than £350 million to acquire players such as Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia. Nevertheless, compared to last season under Graham Potter, Chelsea’s current situation under Pochettino is the worse.

James Olley of ESPN reports that Pochettino’s team is prepared to authorize the exit of multiple players, including Noni Madueke, Ian Maatsen, and Trevoh Chalobah, in order to finance their transfer plans for January. The Blues were receptive to summer transfer bids for Marc Cucurella and may be again in January if the conditions were perfect.

The four players are valued at approximately £81 million by CIES Football Observatory, which is a substantial sum that might be used to acquire Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford. In order to allow Toney to leave the club in January, the Bees have set a price of £100 million.

On January 16, the England international will return from an eight-month ban. Pochettino is looking to add a clinical striker to Chelsea’s roster in the hopes of improving their goal-scoring performance. After turning down a £30 million return to Burnley in the summer, Maatsen is now only worth €15 million (£13 million), putting him in the position of potentially being traded.

Meanwhile, rumors have it that Pochettino has grown irritated with winger Madueke’s lack of playing time this season, and as a result, Madueke has fallen out of favor with the coach. Chelsea paid €40 million (£34 million) to acquire Madueke from PSV in January of this year, and he might recoup that amount or more.

After his summer transfer to Bayern Munich fell through, Chalobah turned down a transfer to Nottingham Forest. According to football.london’s sources, the English defender has had a frustrating season due to injuries, and Chelsea will likely want to offload him when the January transfer window opens.

Just like the Spanish fullback Cucurella, Chalobah is valued at a meager €20 million (£17 million). Despite making regular appearances under Pochettino, the former Brighton player is another player whose January transfer could be cut short due to the failure of his transfer to Manchester United in the summer.
